338 Agribusiness in the Global Economy
Course Description
The globalization of markets for food and agricultural
products makes it essential to understand how international markets function
and the implications for the business options and choices facing
agribusiness firms. This course covers globalization, going global, the
global food and agribusiness environment, markets that a company might
enter, global agribusiness strategy, and global agribusiness operations.
Institutions and public policies have a strong influence on international
markets. We examine these institutions and policies, how they function, and
how they affect decision-making by agribusiness firms.
Course Objectives
Students who complete the course:
1. Understand the concept of globalization and the factors that are driving
it
2. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of globalization, in general
and for food and agriculture
3. Understand the factors that influence whether a company is ready to go
global
4. Are able to articulate why international trade and investment occur
5. Understand the role of culture in doing business abroad, in general and
in food and agriculture
6. Understand the role of public policies and institutions in affecting food
and agricultural trade among countries
7. Are able to identify and analyze global strategies that agribusiness
firms can use to go global
8. Understand the challenges introduced in supply chain management when
conducted on a global scale by agribusiness firms
9. Are able to articulate strategies for dealing with exchange rate and
other financial risks in global operations.
